The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures welcomes your
interest in our graduate program at Marquette University.
We offer an M.A. and an M.A.T. degree in Spanish. We have
a small but dynamic program in which the majority of students
are teaching assistants. Because of the small program (fifteen
to twenty students), there is a personal and caring atmosphere.
Graduate students interact closely with both faculty and undergraduate
students.
The M.A. graduates are successful in gaining entrance for doctoral
studies at prestigious universities nationwide. M.A.T. graduates
have always found excellent teaching positions both in Wisconsin
and out-of-state.
Milwaukee, with its ethnic diversity, offers many opportunities
for the language student. The International Institute provides
contact with various ethnic groups in the community and is known
for sponsoring the annual International Folk Fair. In addition,
the Milwaukee metropolitan area offers intellectual and cultural
opportunities through its fine museums, libraries and cultural
programs.
We hope you will consider our graduate program. If you
would like to come for a visit, please notify us in advance so
that we may arrange for you to see our facilities and meet our
faculty.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers graduate
study in Spanish leading to the degrees of Master of Arts and Master
of Arts in Teaching.
The following pages are meant to serve two purposes: to give
an introduction to the Department for students considering applying
to its programs, and to serve as a reference guide to the Department's
resources, policies and requirements. Enrolled graduate
students should consult the Graduate
School Bulletin for more detailed information on regulations
and on course descriptions.
Students in the Department's graduate programs form a small and
relative intimate group. Classes and seminars are kept small,
averaging ten to twelve students. Students are given individual
guidance throughout their course study. Each student is
assigned a faculty advisor and is expected to consult with that
advisor periodically on program specifics.
Graduate students can also take advantage of Marquette's unique
summer program
at the University of Veracruz in Xalapa, Mexico. There,
students can earn graduate credit for courses in literature, culture
and linguistics while immersed in the language, culture and sights
of the "Athens of Veracruz."
The Department of Foreign Languages graduate programs are designed
to provide students with a broad background in Spanish literature,
culture and language teaching methodology. The majority
of our graduate students enter teaching careers, continue on to
doctoral studies or secure positions in business or government.
Here are a few comments from our graduates about their experience
at Marquette:
"Among the many strengths, I would count the wide range of courses
in all fields (literature and Linguistics), from the basic (such
as Phonetics and Composition) to the more specific (Poetry, Theater
and Narrative in different centuries). The small size of the groups
also contributed too easier participation and sharing of ideas."
M.A.T. 2001
"Both as a student and teaching assistant, I always felt very
good at Marquette. Professors were not only very friendly, but
also very professional and always promoted intellectual growth."
M.A. 1998.
"One of the most positive aspects of the program is the faculty.
The various Spanish professors were always willing to help me,
and simply to discuss things that interested me (and other students
as well). I think that because the program is relatively small,
the relationship between professors and students is able to flourish.
I personally benefited a great deal from the relationships I
formed with my professors." M.A. 2000.
"It was extremely valuable for me to have the opportunity to
work in the department as a teaching assistant. It enriched my
experience enormously; as well as my professional training." M.A.
1996.
"I truly value the education I received at Marquette in the Spanish
Master's degree. The courses were interesting, challenging and
varied. The professors were knowledgeable and devoted to their
profession and content areas. Specifically, the M.A.T. program
was very good. I use a lot of the education course content in
the classroom today." M.A.T. 1998.
"The academic preparation I got during my M.A. at MU helped me
greatly to pursue my Ph.D. degree ... without any problems.
Thank you to the work I did at MU I could keep my grade average
and successfully pass all the exams and other requirements so
far." M.A. 1994
"Without a teaching assistantship I would not have been able
to pursue Graduate Studies in the States. The TAship gave me the
opportunity not only to continue my education but to learn and
experience the American Academic System and American life in general.
My studying at MU opened the doors to a new future for me. MU
has changed my life in a very positive way." M.A. 1994.
