PLAN OF ACTION The purpose of Phase 2 is to begin implementing the highest priority gender equity initiatives that the University has indicated a willingness to support in Phase 1. By June 1, 2001, the AVP should obtain from each College procedures for measuring the progress toward promotion and tenure of existing faculty who hold the rank of Assistant Professor in a tenure-track position. Particular attention should be drawn to women who hold that rank. By June 1, 2001, the AVP should obtain recruitment plans from each College. These plans should include initiatives for increasing the number of qualified women in candidate pools, for interviewing these candidates, and for recognizing the importance of balancing gender proportions among the faculty. These procedures should reflect the best practices currently in place in the University. [The perceptions survey indicated that all faculty at Marquette value diversity in faculty ranks. Having a more gender-balanced faculty should be recognized as a recruitment goal that positively impacts the teaching, research, and service mission of the University.] By June 1, 2001, the AVP should devise a written policy regarding the role of gender balance in University determinations about academic programming, including existing disciplines, the potential for starting new programs, and the closing of existing programs. The policy should include provision for gender impact statements where initiatives to start new programs or close existing programs are undertaken.
