III. Findings and Recommendations of
the Task Force
D. Findings and Recommendations From the Subcommittee
on Administrators
FINDINGS (Continued)
c. Findings from Interviews with
Vice-Presidents.
- Both Vice-Presidents expressed concern that gender
equity issues need to be included in the University
Strategic Plan.
- One of two Vice-Presidents remarked on the need to
investigate whether women are being adequately
represented in pools of candidates for faculty positions,
suggesting that reports filed about the University's
affirmative action measures should be reviewed.
- Both Vice-Presidents agreed that there is a need for
educational initiatives on gender equity.
- Both Vice-Presidents were positively disposed toward
mentoring programs in academic units.
- One of two Vice-Presidents expressed agreement with
the goals articulated in the Subcommittee's documents,
including the institution of timelines to begin dialogue
and educational programs on gender equity; increasing the
hiring of women; starting or continuing mentoring
programs; and reviewing policies for promotion and tenure
and annual review.
- Both Vice-Presidents endorsed the idea of setting
hard goals for achieving gender equity objectives and
including those goals in the University Strategic Plan.
Both endorsed the goal of correcting gender-related
salary disparities. Both endorsed increasing the hiring
of women, and increasing the hiring of women at senior
levels. Both saw the need to place women in higher
University administrative positions. In addition, one
Vice-President suggested including gender equity
initiatives under the broader umbrella of Faculty
Development. He also suggested that each academic unit
should develop its own action plan for achieving gender
equity, beginning with an assessment of its present
baseline situation. Each unit should then set measurable
gender equity goals for itself and periodically assess
its progress in achieving them.
