Senior Director and Team Lead of Major and Planned Gifts
The Senior Director reports to the Chief of National Programs and is responsible for overseeing the administration of the Office of Planned Giving as well as maintaining a select prospect portfolio and assisting in planning and implementing planned giving strategies and related training for the University Advancement team. The Senior Director and Team Lead shall cultivate, solicit and steward relationships with alumni, parents, and friends and encourage them to support Marquette University through appropriate planned gift vehicles, such as life income trusts, bequests, gift annuities, and gifts of retirement plan assets.
This Director will lead and manage the work of the Director of Major and Planned Gifts, Major and Planned Giving Officer and Coordinator. This includes active participation in Administrator Management Group. The Senior Director and Team Lead will be the primary resource to work with Leadership and Major Gift Fundraisers on complicated charitable split-interest trusts with difficult assets. Implementing and managing a Planned Giving Advisory Committee to give Marquette University greater visibility in the greater Milwaukee area will also be a responsibility of the Senior Director. This position will provide strategic vision for planned giving to the Chief of National Programs, and will implement this vision in preparation for a new campaign; develop and execute a fundraising business plan annually; track progress toward meeting fundraising performance benchmarks; manage a select portfolio of prospects with capacity to make planned gifts; make face-to-face visits (moves) each month designed to move prospects toward making a philanthropic commitment to the university; serve as a planned giving consultant with fundraisers, college advancement officers, and others in the university to inform prospects of planned giving opportunities; interact as appropriate with the Departments of Treasury Services, Development, Operations, and General Counsel to ensure the proper receipt and accounting of planned gifts; responsible for planned giving training for University Advancement.
The Senior Director and Team Lead will encourage membership in the Legacy Society and lead planning and implementation of stewardship events as determined in the yearly Planned Giving Strategic Plan; oversee Office of Planned Giving efforts for the Golden Jubilee Reunion; encourage planned gifts as a type of reunion giving, and oversee all broad-based marketing activities to promote and encourage planned gifts.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree required with an emphasis in marketing and/or communication. An advanced degree in business or law preferred. Five years of development experience and knowledge of deferred giving instruments and tax incentive giving preferred. Candidates must have basic knowledge of the tax system, charitable estate planning, estate administration procedures and marketing; knowledge of the various types of planned giving vehicles. Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as superior interpersonal and organizational skills, are essential.
