HOW WE USE YOUR GIFT

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Conor Sweeney never thought he would see the world by attending Marquette University. But a Raynor Scholarship enabled him to do just that.

Named in honor of Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J., three of these scholarships are awarded to students each year. They are selected based on classroom performance, college entrance exam scores, and leadership potential that has been demonstrated through curricular and extracurricular activities.

Truth be told, before the scholarship offer was made Marquette was not at the top of Sweeney’s list of colleges. Now he’s sure that coming to Marquette was the best decision he ever made.

The scholarship requires academic excellence, which he pursues in the honors program in economics. Thanks to the financial support, Sweeney has been able to spend breaks between semesters visiting places like South Africa and China and volunteering his time on trips to Jamaica, Kenya and Kentucky. The challenge of accepting a scholarship, he says, is knowing that someone has made an investment in him as a Marquette student.

"The Raynor Scholarship is both an opportunity and a challenge," admits Sweeney. "I have often been told that much is expected of those who are given much. With this scholarship, I have been given an incredible gift and I intend to show my appreciation through action."
