A senior in the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication, Misfeldt credits scholarships for bringing the cost of tuition within her reach. A Diederich Scholarship, among other scholarships, has given her the chance to hone her journalism skills. "Having scholarships has allowed me to focus on my academics and not worry about the finances," she says.
Her focus means serving as well as learning. As a freshman, Misfeldt read to children in the waiting room of the 16th Street Clinic. The next year, she joined the campus chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
"Marquette is so different with our community service," she says. "It's not only working for the community, but with the community."
Last year, as a junior, Misfeldt headed to South Africa to participate in Marquette's service learning program based in Cape Town. In addition to courses taught by experts in their fields, she worked there with community organizations that support people struggling with injustice and poverty.
Misfeldt thought she wanted to work for a metropolitan newspaper. But as she reflected on that unforgettable semester in Cape Town, her horizons expanded.
"I wanted to go over and leave my mark, but I think South Africa left more of a mark on me," she explains. "I feel a greater responsibility to use my education — to use my privileges and talents — to better the world and work for the greater good. I've realized that my education is helping me to help others. If I didn't have the education I've received from Marquette, that wouldn't be possible."
