Department Representatives are volunteered by or nominated by their respective department to serve as a representative to the GSO. They attend GSO meetings and assist the Chair in communicating with students in all departments. If your department does not have a department representative and you would like to volunteer, please email gso@marquette.edu. About the Academic Senate
2012-13 GSO Representative for the Academic Senate: Gregory Gillman
The Academic Senate is a deliberative body with responsibilities for academic policy formulation of an all-University character and for the review and evaluation of academic programs and planning. Its conclusions on academic policy, academic planning, and program evaluation represent the official collective stance of the Academic Division, and they will be reported as such by the Provost, to the appropriate higher authorities. Recommendations of the Academic Senate are subject to the approval of the President and the Trustees. One student member from the professional or graduate body is selected to serve a one-year term.
About the Board for Student Media
2012-2013 GSO Representative for the Board of Student Media: Patrick Johnson
The Board for Student Media is the committee of the Academic Senate that oversees Marquette University’s student media. These include the Marquette Tribune, Marquette Journal, Marquette Radio, MUTV, Student Interactive Media and any future ventures conducted under the direction of Student Media. The Board is responsible for:
- Establishing and overseeing policies regarding student media operations
- Making recommendations on matters of student media budgets and salaries to the Dean of the Diederich College of Communication
- Establishing and maintaining advertising, news and editorial policies
- Hearing complaints and appeals about student media, and making recommendations as appropriate to the dean or provost
- Reporting annually on the Student Media to the Academic Senate
One student member from the professional or graduate student body who has a background in communication is selected to serve a one-year term.
About the Committee on Academic Policies and Issues
2012-2013 GSO Representative for the Committee on Academic Policies and Issues: Aishwarya Shankar
The Committee on Academic Policies and Issues (CAPI), a standing committee of the University Academic Senate, pursues long-range planning and vision of the academic mission of the university as it transcends individual programs, schools and colleges. Its business may be initiated by the Senate, the Provost, other Senate bodies, or individual faculty. The Committee is responsible for:
- Provides consultative input and reporting to the Senate
- Provides a forum for discussion and in-depth study of issues not feasible on the Senate floor
- Contributes review and analysis of general university academic policies and practices such as academic standards, grading policies and guidelines for initiating and terminating academic programs
- Contributes long-range strategic planning advice toward providing competitive, high-quality academic programs through evaluation of issues such as instructional delivery models and technical support, balancing of faculty lines, teaching loads and expectations, and student support and opportunity frameworks
- Provides consultation to and for the University Board of Undergraduate Studies and the University Board of Graduate Studies, and Committee on Academic Procedure as requested by the University Academic Senate or by either Board
- Provides an annual report to the UAS

- Developing policy and implementing the assessment of student learning at Marquette, both undergraduate and graduate
About the Committee on Teaching
2012-2013 GSO Representative for the Committee on Teaching: Matthew Costello
The Committee on Teaching is a committee of the Academic Division that reports to the Academic Senate and the Provost. The Committee addresses and advances the practice and scholarship of teaching and learning at Marquette University. The Committee is responsible for:
- Promoting quality teaching and learning through the development of recommendations for policies related to teaching
- Identifying and implementing methods to recognize and promote the scholarship of teaching
- Managing the selection process for faculty teaching awards and grants including the Faculty Awards for Teaching Excellence and the Way Klinger Interdisciplinary Teaching Award
- Collaborating with the Center for Teaching and Learning to provide seminars and resources for faculty development
- Reviewing and recommending policies to provide a supportive academic teaching and learning environment including educational technology
- Providing an annual report to the Academic Senate
One student member from the professional or graduate body is selected to serve a one-year term.
About the University Assessment Committee
2012-2013 GSO Representative for the University Assessment Committee: Michelle Nemer
The University Assessment Committee, an Academic Division committee, addresses and advances effective assessment of student learning at Marquette University. The Committee is responsible for:
- Collaborating with the Provost and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Programs and Teaching to ensure ongoing systems of assessment, including:
- Development, implementation, and maintenance of the framework for university assessment systems
- Development, implementation, and maintenance of learning assessment processes at the institutional level
- Review of institutional and program level learning assessment reports;
- Recommendation of changes and modifications in university assessment processes as indicated
- Advising faculty, department, and colleges on assessment procedures and methods.
- Recommending to and collaborating with the Center for Teaching and Learning to provide assessment workshops and seminars for faculty.
About the University Board of Graduate Studies
2012-2013 GSO Representative for the University Board of Graduate Studies: M. Luke Samalya
The University Board of Graduate Studies is a standing committee of the Academic Senate. The Board shall address formulating plans and policies for all graduate and professional education and shall serve as a forum to discuss continuous improvement of the graduate and professional programs. The Board is responsible for:
- Formulating policy on admission requirements, academic standards and procedures, theses and dissertations, probation and dismissal of students for academic reasons, and degree requirements
- Reviewing reports on institutional graduate and professional learning assessment results
- Appraising the quality of the graduate and professional programs
- Making recommendations for changes in existing programs, expansion of programs, introduction of new programs, and termination of programs; and for approval of individual students' Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programs
- Forwarding decisions to create a new degree, major, or certificate or to discontinue an existing degree or major to the Academic Senate for approval and recommendation to the Provost
- Submitting recommendations on University and College wide changes in graduate and professional programs, student policies and regulations and other matters to the Provost
- Serving, at the discretion of the Vice Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, as a hearing body for graduate student appeals
- Providing an annual report to the Academic Senate

About the University Library Board
2012-2013 GSO Representative for the University Library Board: Heidi Wacker
The University Library Board is advisory to the Dean of Libraries on library matters as they affect the teaching and research of faculty and the learning environment of students at the Raynor Memorial Libraries. The Board is responsible for:
- Reviewing and recommending policies dealing with Raynor Memorial Libraries services, collections, and facilities on behalf of faculty and students as well as providing an annual report to the Academic Senate

About the Master Planning Committee
2012-2013 GSO Representative for the Master Planning Committee: Katie Friesen
The Facilities Master Planning Committee is charged with providing long term planning, in the context of a 25-year vision, for the university facilities, its neighborhood and major physical assets. The campus facilities master plan illustrates the prospective locations, scope and cost for new and improved facilities to support the mission of Marquette University, and, more, defines how campus improvements can be prioritized, organized, and designed to create a more cohesive, vibrant, engaged learning community. The committee is responsible for:
- Reviewing capital project proposals
- Prioritizing discretionary capital expenditures submitted through the annual capital planning process
- Creating project committees as needed, as well as providing oversight for project and planning committees
