GSO Council Representatives

List of GSO Counsil Representives

Representatives for the GSO Council are volunteered/nominated by their respective department or program to serve as a representative to the GSO. They attend bi-semester GSO Council meetings and assist the Chair in communicating with students in their respective program/department. GSO Council members also present the GSO with ideas or issues that are important to the students within their discipline. If your department does not have a department representative and you would like to volunteer, please email gso@marquette.edu. Feel free to contact your department representatives with ideas or issues that you would like to see the GSO work on!

Academic Senate

GSO Representative: David Marra

The Academic Senate is a deliberative body with responsibilities for academic policy formulation of an all-University character and for the review and evaluation of academic programs and planning. Its conclusions on academic policy, academic planning, and program evaluation represent the official collective stance of the Academic Division, and they will be reported as such by the Provost, to the appropriate higher authorities. Recommendations of the Academic Senate are subject to the approval of the President and the Trustees. One student member from the professional or graduate body is selected to serve a one-year term.

Board for Student Media

GSO Representative: Pravin Dhakal

The Board for Student Media is the committee of the Academic Senate that oversees Marquette University’s student media. These include the Marquette Tribune, Marquette Journal, Marquette Radio, MUTV, Student Interactive Media and any future ventures conducted under the direction of Student Media. The Board is responsible for:

  • Establishing and overseeing policies regarding student media operations
  • Making recommendations on matters of student media budgets and salaries to the Dean of the Diederich College of Communication
  • Establishing and maintaining advertising, news and editorial policies
  • Hearing complaints and appeals about student media, and making recommendations as appropriate to the dean or provost
  • Reporting annually on the Student Media to the Academic Senate

One student member from the professional or graduate student body who has a background in communication is selected to serve a one-year term.

Committee on Academic Technology

GSO Representative: Carolyne Hurlburt

The Committee is responsible for:

  • Developing policy and implementing the assessment of student learning at Marquette, both undergraduate and graduate

Committee on Diversity and Equity

GSO Representative: Ryan Warner (GS) & Jesse Byam-Katzman (PS)

The Committee on Diversity and Equity is responsible for:

  • Ensuring, promoting, facilitating, and monitoring diversity and equality opportunities for the university.

Committee on Teaching

GSO Representative: Jane Sloan

The Committee on Teaching is a committee of the Academic Division that reports to the Academic Senate and the Provost. The Committee addresses and advances the practice and scholarship of teaching and learning at Marquette University. The Committee is responsible for:

  • Promoting quality teaching and learning through the development of recommendations for policies related to teaching
  • Identifying and implementing methods to recognize and promote the scholarship of teaching
  • Managing the selection process for faculty teaching awards and grants including the Faculty Awards for Teaching Excellence and the Way Klingler Interdisciplinary Teaching Award
  • Collaborating with the Center for Teaching and Learning to provide seminars and resources for faculty development
  • Reviewing and recommending policies to provide a supportive academic teaching and learning environment including educational technology
  • Providing an annual report to the Academic Senate

One student member from the professional or graduate body is selected to serve a one-year term.

Counseling Center Advisory Board

GSO Representative: Stephanie Hood

The Counseling Center Advisory Board (CCAB)exists to promote a positive and open channel of communication between the Counseling Center and the student body. CCAB members are students whose feedback and leadership is used to enhance awareness of student issues as they relate to services offered by the Counseling Center and promote awareness of how the services support personal and academic success. CCAB members serve a one-year term and meet two times per semester.

Financial Planning and Review Committee

GSO Representative: Daniel Adsett

 The University Financial Planning and Review Committee (UFPRC) is advisory to the President and supports the financial planning and program review functions for the university in consultation with senior administration. Its purposes are (1) to formulate a balanced operating budget and recommendations that support the university’s strategic plan and academic and administrative priorities, (2) to develop a balanced Capital Budget, (3) to project the long-term implications of the annual budget, and (4) to conduct financial analyses of selected programs.

Innovation Council

GSO Representatives: Jack Senefeld & Brice Cleland

The Innovation Council reviews pre-proposals and proposals to the Strategic Innovation Fund, meets to discuss the review process and the results, and attends Strategic Innovation Fund events. 

Marquette Forum Steering Committee

GSO Representative: Jillian Lukens

The Marquette Forum is a yearlong series of inclusive conversations, bringing experts of national renown together with those from Marquette and the Milwaukee community. The Steering Committee will help direct the events of the 2017-2018 forum, with a focus around health.

 

Sexual Violence Prevention Education Coordination Committee

GSO Representative: Jennifer Marra

The Sexual Violence Prevention Education Coordinating Committee is an interdisciplinary work group comprised of administrative staff, faculty and students; whose mission is to be informed about, coordinate and support comprehensive sexual violence prevention education at Marquette.

Student Affairs Advisory Committee

GSO Representative: Nathaniel Helminiak

The committee has three main goals: (1) use as a consulting and advisory committee for student affairs matters, (2) discuss what is and is not working on campus, and (3) discuss campus climate and current issues facing Marquette students.

University Assessment Committee

GSO Representative: Brittney Wyatt

The University Assessment Committee, an Academic Division committee, addresses and advances effective assessment of student learning at Marquette University. The Committee is responsible for:

  • Collaborating with the Provost and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Programs and Teaching to ensure ongoing systems of assessment, including:
      • Development, implementation, and maintenance of the framework for university assessment systems
      • Development, implementation, and maintenance of learning assessment processes at the institutional level
      • Review of institutional and program level learning assessment reports;
      • Recommendation of changes and modifications in university assessment processes as indicated
  • Advising faculty, department, and colleges on assessment procedures and methods.
  • Recommending to and collaborating with the Center for Teaching and Learning to provide assessment workshops and seminars for faculty. 

University Board of Graduate Studies

GSO Representative: Margaret Nettesheim-Hoffman

The University Board of Graduate Studies is a standing committee of the Academic Senate. The Board shall address formulating plans and policies for all graduate and professional education and shall serve as a forum to discuss continuous improvement of the graduate and professional programs. The Board is responsible for:

  • Formulating policy on admission requirements, academic standards and procedures, theses and dissertations, probation and dismissal of students for academic reasons, and degree requirements
  • Reviewing reports on institutional graduate and professional learning assessment results
  • Appraising the quality of the graduate and professional programs
  • Making recommendations for changes in existing programs, expansion of programs, introduction of new programs, and termination of programs; and for approval of individual students' Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programs
  • Forwarding decisions to create a new degree, major, or certificate or to discontinue an existing degree or major to the Academic Senate for approval and recommendation to the Provost
  • Submitting recommendations on University and College wide changes in graduate and professional programs, student policies and regulations and other matters to the Provost
  • Serving, at the discretion of the Vice Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, as a hearing body for graduate student appeals
  • Providing an annual report to the Academic Senate

One student member from the professional or graduate body is selected to serve a one-year term.

GSO Representative: Emilie Teitz

University Library Board

GSO Representative: Jennifer Dahlman

The University Library Board is advisory to the Dean of Libraries on library matters as they affect the teaching and research of faculty and the learning environment of students at the Raynor Memorial Libraries. The Board is responsible for:

  • Reviewing and recommending policies dealing with Raynor Memorial Libraries services, collections, and facilities on behalf of faculty and students as well as providing an annual report to the Academic Senate

One student member from the professional or graduate body is selected to serve a one-year term. 

University Staff Senate

GSO Representative: Jeff Lajeunesse

The University Staff Senate is a group that represents Marquette University staff to ensure that the interests of staff are considered alongside those of faculty and students in institutional affairs that affect life in the workplace and in the advancement of the university's mission.
