September 28 – January 14 2007
Opening Reception, October 27th, 6 pm.

Hockey Seen is a collaborative, multimedia presentation that explores the relationship of sports to dance. The work was created in 1972 under the direction of Nelson Goodman, former Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Harvard University, and author of Languages of Art, 1976. Goodman collaborated with artist Katherine Sturgis, composer John C. Adams and choreographer Martha Armstrong Gray in the creation of this piece.

The exhibition Hockey Seen is a tribute to Goodman who was one of the foremost philosophers during the first half of the twentieth century. The exhibition will consist of a video of the dance performance directed by Goodman and choreographed by Martha Armstrong Gray, with music composed by John C. Adams, sketches by Katherine Sturgis and costumes from the original production.

The piece and accompanying material was gifted to the Haggerty Museum of Art from the estate of the Nelson Goodman in 2000. This exhibition which combines visual and performance art will be presented in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Society for Aesthetics (ASA) in the fall of 2006.
