June 28 - September 23, 2007
Presented in conjunction with the World History Conference, Marquette University
Speaker: Waswo X. Waswo, Artist
The exhibition India Poems: The Photographs of Milwaukee Artist Waswo X Waswo features a suite of photographs taken by artist Waswo X Waswo while he traveled across the Indian subcontinent between 1999 and 2004. His images are subtle, sepia-toned portraits of contemporary people and places, devoid of modern and industrial details. The artist captures the beauty of rural India and attempts to cross the conventional boundaries that separate peoples, societies and nations.
Photographs by the Indian pictorialist, Dr. K. L. Kothary, also included in the exhibition, create a dialogue between Western and non-Western interpretations of India.
Waswo X. Waswo was born in Milwaukee. He studied at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, The Milwaukee Center for Photography, and Studio Marangoni-The Center for Contemporary Photography in Florence, Italy.
