Haggerty Museum hosts Midwest Art History Society
Conference with MAM and UWM
April 18 - 20, 2002

(Milwaukee, WI) The Haggerty Museum of Art is one of the hosts for the annual Midwest Art Society Conference, along with the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The conference, taking place April 18-20, will feature papers on Western, African and Asian art, gender in art, museum and urban design, and museum acquisitions.

Four of the sessions will be held in the third floor Ballroom of the Alumni Memorial Union on Friday afternoon, April 19 from 2:15-6 pm. Dr. Curtis L. Carter, director of the Haggerty Museum, will chair an open session from 2:15 - 4:00 pm. Dr. Annemarie Sawkins, associate curator and a member of the conference steering committee, will co-chair the session on Medieval Art and Architecture from 4:15 - 6:00 pm. Dr. Sawkins will also present a paper in the session on Museum Acquisitions and Collections on April 19 from 10:30 - 12:15 pm at the Milwaukee Art Museum.

Katherine Ware, curator of photography at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, will present a lecture for the conference attendees on the artist Man Ray at 6 pm in Cudahy Hall 001, in conjunction with the Haggerty Museum of Artís exhibition, Man Ray on Paper, being shown from April 1 ­ May 26, 2002. A reception at the Haggerty Museum follows the lecture from 7-8:30 pm.

Ware, a Man Ray specialist, has been published widely and most recently curated an exhibition on Man Ray at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Her publications include Man Ray 1890-1926, and the exhibition catalogue  Practical Dreamer: The Photographs of Man Ray.

Registration for the Midwest Art History Society conference begins at 8:00 am on Thursday April 18 in the Main Meeting Room at the Milwaukee Art Museum and is open to the public. The registration fee is $95 ($55 for students and Docents) and includes a one-year membership in the Midwest Art History Society (MAHS). The MAHS is an organization that brings together academic, museum-based, and independent art historians in the common goal of scholarly inquiry and the exchange of ideas. The Haggerty Museum of Art is located at North 13th St. and West Clybourn Avenue on the campus of Marquette University. Museum hours are Monday - Wednesday, Friday -
