(Milwaukee, WI) Noted photography critic A.D. Coleman will speak at the opening of the exhibition Faces and Figures: Contemporary Scandinavian Photography. The exhibition, held at Marquette University's Haggerty Museum of Art, opens with Mr. Colemanís 6 p.m. lecture on Thursday, January 24. A reception from 7 to 9 p.m. follows the lecture at the Haggerty. The exhibition may be viewed through April 1, 2002.
Since the late 1980s, Coleman has taught, lectured, and published extensively in the Nordic countries, particularly Denmark, Sweden, and Finland. Through these experiences, he has become familiar with the Nordic photography community, inspiring his written commentary on such photographers as Lars Tunbjörk, Christer Strömholm, and Jorma Puranen. Mr. Coleman was awarded a major grant from Swedenís Hasselblad Foundation for his research on the impact of the lens on western culture.
Coleman has published numerous books and collections of essays; his
internationally syndicated columns and essays have appeared in publications
such as ARTnews and The New York Times, and have been translated and published
in 27 countries. Mr. Coleman presently resides in New York, and is
executive director of The Nearby Café, a multi-subject electronic
magazine.
