Former Director of Smithsonianís Hirshhorn Museum to speak at Haggerty Museum opening

(Milwaukee, WI) James T. Demetrion, former director of the Smithsonian Institute's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden will speak at the opening of the exhibition of German and Austrian Art of the 1920s and 30s: The Marvin and Janet Fishman Collection. The exhibition, held at Marquette Universityís Haggerty Museum of Art, opens with Mr. Demetrion's lecture on Thursday, April 11, at 6 pm, followed by a reception from 7-9 pm. The exhibition can be viewed through June 16, 2002.

Demetrion served as the second director of the Smithsonian's national museum of modern and contemporary art, which opened in 1974. Described as "one of the most level headed, clear thinking directors in the museum field," Demetrion is a specialist in German and Austrian Expressionism. Throughout his career, he has curated several major exhibitions of early twentieth century artists.

The Haggerty Museum of Art is located at North 13th St. and West Clybourn Avenue on the campus of Marquette University. Museum hours are Mon- Wed, 10am-4:30pm, Thursday, 10am-8pm and Sunday, noon-5pm.
