Faces and Figures: Contemporary Scandinavian Photography
Special Events at the Haggerty Museum of Art

(Milwaukee, WI) In conjunction with the Fifth Annual International Arts Festival in Milwaukee and the American-Scandinavian Foundation, Marquette University's Haggerty Museum of Art will present the exhibition Faces and Figures: Contemporary Scandinavian Photography. Included in the exhibition are photographs that explore the human form and psyche in both bold and subtle, stark and rich physical and emotional contexts. The exhibition runs from January 24 through April 1, 2002.

Faces and Figures: Contemporary Scandinavian Photography opens on Thursday, January 24 with a 6 p.m. lecture by noted photography critic and distinguished writer and teacher A. D. Coleman. Since the late 1980s, Mr. Coleman has taught, lectured, and published extensively in the Nordic countries, and was awarded a major grant from Sweden's Hasselblad Foundation for his research on the impact of the lens on western culture. A reception from 7 to 9 p.m. follows the opening lecture at the Haggerty.

The Haggerty Museum is also pleased to host a wooden shoe carving demonstration by skilled craftsman Bob Siegel, Jr., "Sieg." Called traesko in the Scandinavian countries, wooden shoes keep feet dry and warm and traditionally offered farmers and laborers protection against the elements and falling objects or the force of farm animalsí hooves. Mr. Siegel's carving demonstration will take place at the Haggerty Museum at noon on Sunday, January 27, 2002.

On Thursday, March 7, 2002 at 7:00 p.m., the Haggerty Museum of Art will host a concert of Scandinavian music performed by the group Lekspel. The concert, held in the Museum galleries, will include a selection of music from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland, performed on traditional Scandinavian instruments.
