The Haggerty Museum of Art and Hartford University School for Urban Explorations are pleased to present Social Justice--Get it in Your Head! 2005, an exhibition of sculpture and poetry created by students from Hartford University School. An opening reception will take place Wednesday, April 27th at the Milwaukee County Courthouse (1st floor rotunda), 901 N. 9th St., from 3:15-4:30 p.m.

In January of 2003, the Haggerty Museum of Art presented the exhibition Watts: Art & Social Change in Los Angeles, 1963-2002. In conjunction with the exhibition the Museum and Hartford University School developed Social Justice--Get it in Your Head! Fifteen students from Hartford University School cast and painted concrete heads that were exhibited and, subsequently, donated to a variety of Milwaukee-based organizations devoted to social justice.

This year, nineteen students from Hartford University School, working individually or as part of a group, were paired with a Wisconsin-based organization devoted to children's causes and/or education. The students learned about their designated organization and then cast and painted a concrete head that symbolically represents that association. Each head is accompanied by a short poem (written by the students with the help of Marya Bradley), addressing the causes/concerns of the represented organization.

The heads will be shown together at the Milwaukee County Courthouse From April 27 through May 20, 2005. Throughout the month of June, each head will be on display at the organization to which it is donated.

The student artists will be on hand at the opening reception (on April 27th) to talk about their work and their experience partaking in this project.

Participating organizations include:
The African American Children's Theatre, Agape Community Center, Benedict Center,
Center for Blind and Visually Impaired Children, Children's Health Education Center, Community High School, House of Peace, Hunger Task Force, La Causa, Inc., New School for Community Service, Pathfinders-a program of The Counseling Center of Milwaukee, Inc., Penfield Children's Center, Task Force on Family Violence, The Art Gallery (at the Marian Center for Nonprofits), VSA arts of Wisconsin, Inc., and Wisconsin Early Autism Project.
