© 2000 Marquette University
Essays by Curtis L. Carter, Robert Descharnes, Lynn Garafola, and George Dunkel.
Highlighting Salvador Dalí's contribution to the ballet and theater, this catalogue features the stage backdrop and costumes designed by Dalí for The Three-Cornered Hat. Leading dance historian, Lynn Garafola presents the collaboration between Dalí and the Spanish dancer Ana María and her Ballet Español together with the history of the ballet and its performance. The ballet based on Pedro Antonio de Alarcón's comic story El sombrero de tres picos, published in 1874, was first performed in 1949. The story, which earlier inspired Serge de Diaghilev to stage Le Tricorne, was set to the music of Manuel de Falla and performed by the Ballets Russes. In addition to scholarly essays on Dalí and the ballet, this catalogue features a selection of the thirty-six costumes of the original Ballet Español production along with additional drawings, photographs, and souvenir programs.
