Sexual Violence Awareness Week (SVAW) is coordinated by a large group of Marquette departments and student groups, each September, to provide programs, workshops, speakers, and information tables that encourage healthy relationships and violence prevention; and to honor survivors and victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking and relationship violence. Please check back, soon, for a full list of events.
Survivors are often pressured by others (or themselves) to forgive their abusers and those who did not protect them in times of need. Forgiveness or “letting go” are processes that cannot be forced and usually come at the end of the stages of grief and loss. We will explore these processes in depth.
This program is part of The Healing Center's "Topic Nights," a series of free informational sessions for survivors, their loved ones and service providers (or anyone inclined to help). Participants must call ahead to register at (414) 671-4325.
The healing process involves getting in touch with various feelings and processing them in new ways. Anger, sadness and denial are steps along the path to becoming more at peace as a survivor. We will talk about each of these “stages of grief” and how they work for survivors of sexual abuse/assault. We will also offer suggestions for facilitating healing along the way.

Jean Kilbourne's pioneering work helped develop and popularize the study of gender representation in advertising. Her award-winning Killing Us Softly films have influenced millions of college and high school students across two generations. In this important new film, Kilbourne reviews if and how the image of women in advertising has changed over the last 20 years.
With wit and warmth, Kilbourne uses over 160 ads and TV commercials to critique advertising's image of women. By fostering creative and productive dialogue, she invites viewers to look at familiar images in a new way, that moves and empowers them to take action. A discussion will follow the screening of the film. Panelists will include: Dr. Amelia Zurcher, Carmen Pitre, Jolynn Woehrer, and Joseph Clark.
During Sexual Violence Awareness Week (SVAW) 2008, staff and students can stop by the SVAW information table in the Alumni Memorial Union 2nd floor lobby to learn about SVAW events, as well as how to get invovled with sexual violence prevention/intervention on-campus and in the Milwaukee community. Visitors can also view the Clothesline Project display, or donate a used cell phone to the HopeLine® collection.
