If you’ve been the victim of sexual assault, dating violence, or stalking, please know that it is not your fault. You are not alone. There are many resources available on the Marquette campus, and in the Milwaukee community. If you would like to talk to someone, and don’t know where start, please contact HAVEN by phone at (414) 288-5746, or by email.
When to get help
Obviously, it is important to get help when you are ready and comfortable to do so. In the case of sexual assault, the best time to get medical attention is as soon as possible. For physical evidence to be useful, it is best collected within 72 hours of the assault. You should not shower, bathe, or change clothes prior to seeing a medical professional, as this has the potential to destroy important physical evidence, should you decide to pursue legal action in the future.
Where to go
There are many offices on the Marquette campus and in the Milwaukee community that can assist you. Campus resources you may want to consider include the Department of Public Safety and the Counseling Center.
- The Department of Public Safety has a number of caring and supportive officers who are able to help you. Female officers with training in the area of sexual violence and relationship violence are available. The staff are well connected to both campus and community resources and can provide escort services to any of those resources. It is important to note that reporting your assault to the Department of Public Safety does not mean that you will be required to file charges or pursue legal action. Reporting to Public Safety only ensures that you have opportunity to explore those options further in the future, if you wish.
- The staff at the Counseling Center can provide you with counseling support or crisis intervention services. Counselors are available 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; or, after hours by calling Public Safety at (414) 288-1911 and asking for the on-call counselor. All contact with the Counseling Center is confidential.
- An off-campus resource that you may want to consider is the Sexual Assault Treatment Center (SATC) at Aurora Sinai Medical Center. SATC provides services to anyone who has experienced any type of sexual assault or sexual abuse. It is open 24-hours-a-day, and can be accessed in person (945 N. 12th Street) or by phone (414-219-5555). Clients seen at SATC are offered medical assessment and treatment, emotional support and counseling, medical/legal evidence collection, and screening for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. You have the authority to choose the services and resources you wish to utilize – non are required. Going to SATC does not mean that you have to press charges against your perpetrator.
