In July of 2003, Hayes retired as president of the University of San Diego, a private, Catholic, university of more than 7,000 undergraduate students. She joined USD in 1995, after six years as Executive Vice President/Provost and Professor of Biology at Saint Louis University. Hayes spent 27 years at Loyola University of Chicago, beginning in the Natural Science Department and leaving as Vice President for Academic Affairs. A native of Chicago, she received her B.S. in Biology from Mundelein, and an M.S. in Botany from the University of Illinois in Urbana where she was named a University Fellow in Botany. Hayes earned her Ph.D. at Northwestern University where she was named National Science Foundation Fellow. A passionate advocate for Catholic higher education, Hayes has published widely as a Catholic university administrator. She has been recognized for her work in Catholic higher education with honorary doctorate degrees from Loyola University of Chicago, Fontbonne College, Mount St. Mary's College and Saint Louis University. A community leader who has served on a number of civic, corporate and university boards, she has been recognized for leadership and service in San Diego, on the West Coast and across the country.
