Joyana Jacoby

Joyana Jacoby grew up in Stevens Point, WI and is a senior at Marquette University. She will graduate in May with degrees in theology and sociology and a minor in Spanish. The core of Joyana's experience at Marquette has been service, focusing on Hispanic ministry and issues of hunger and homelessness. She is a retreat leader, a member of JUSTICE, and was instrumental in initiating Marquette's new interdisciplinary minor in justice and peace. During the summers Joyana has volunteered in Appalachia and with the Claretian Summer Ministry program in inner city Chicago. In her very spare time she enjoys running and writing letters. Joyana is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Sigma Nu. She also received the Distinguished Student Scholar Award for the Wisconsin Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies.

Wanting to go deeper, second semester junior year Joyana answered a call to study in to El Salvador through La Casa de la Solidaridad. The immersion experience was focused on living simply in solidarity and understanding the perspective of the poor. While taking classes at the University of Central America, she also spent two days a week in the rural village La Javia learning "la realidad" from the people. Having been "ruined for life," she hopes to continue her pursuit of justice and peace by volunteering for a year or two.
