Welcome to the College of Health Sciences Letter of Recommendation Service!

This free service is compatible with health professions programs that do not use electronic letters. For example, pre-dent and pre-med students will find this service helpful, but pre-PA students and pre-PT students will not want to use it, as those application services utilize an electronic letter service, where the recommenders are prompted by email from the service directly. Please check into your profession’s application service first, and if you have questions after that, feel free to email our Pre-Health Advisor at laurie.goll@mu.edu.

When applying to medical school or dental school, timing is critical. You should have your entire primary application submitted via AMCAS, AACOMAS or AADSAS by early to mid-June. Though having your letters of recommendation in is not part of submitting these primary applications, some of the information in your letter packet will help you with the primary applications. We recommend starting your letter of recommendation packet in January of your application year (usually junior year), and making sure it is complete and turned in by March. This includes having contacted all your letter writers to ensure they are willing to write you strong letters.

If you are going to utilize this service, there are a few things you will need to do first. Below is a summary of steps you should take.

Fill out the College of Health Sciences Letter Packet, which includes:

Remember to attach a rough draft of your personal statement.
(For help with your personal statement, you can visit the Writing Center in Raynor Library, 240. Personal statements are usually about one page single spaced, and ask the question, “Why do you want to be a (doctor, dentist, etc), and why will you be a good one?” See individual application websites (AMCAS, AADSAS, AACOMAS, etc) for specific character limits. )

  1. Identify the names of your evaluators, and make contact with them via email or in person. Be sure to ask if they are able to write you a strong letter of recommendation. A generic letter that simply states you did well in their class will not help. Review the Recommendation Cover form on our website, and think about whether you are asking the right people.
  2. Check into the schools you are applying to see what letters they require. The general rule is 2 science professors that have had you in class, a non-science professor that has had you in class, and 1-2 other, non-academic letters that can speak to your work ethic, interest in health care, character, or dedication to serving others (among other things). This is a general rule though, and can vary, so be sure to check into your schools.
  3. Drop off your completed packet in the CHS Dean’s Office, SC 244. We will review, scan and email your packet to you at your Marquette email address. You will then be responsible for distributing that packet to each recommender via email or hard copy.
  4. Keep in mind that letters of recommendation are NOT part of the primary application, and you can submit your primary AADSAS, AMCAS, AACOMAS, or other application without letters. Your letters will be reviewed with your secondary applications, if applicable. So give your recommenders plenty of time, but don’t worry if the letters aren’t in when you submit your primary application in June (for medical and dental school, may be later for other programs).
  5. Monitor your status and keep in touch with Laurie Goll, CHS Pre-Health Advisor, to make sure your letters are in and ready to go during the summer of your application year.
