Marquette, pharma company sign licensing agreement
Marquette recently completed a licensing agreement with AviMed Pharmaceuticals, a company founded by Dr. M. Behnam Ghasemzadeh, associate professor of biomedical sciences, and Dr. Dan Sem, associate professor of chemistry. AviMed's aim is to treat psychiatric disorders, namely schizophrenia. Read more.
PT awarded $300,000 grant
The Department of Physical Therapy recently received a $300,000 grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant supports equipment for the training of disadvantaged students in health professions linked to Marquette's Health Careers Opportunity Program. The grant will be used to purchase two motion analysis systems, including a portable system that could be brought to middle and high schools. The systems provide data on various parameters related to human movement and bring science to life through video animations.
Baker earns national award
Dr. David Baker, associate professor of biomedical sciences, has been recognized for outstanding achievements in basic science by NARSAD with the 2010 Freedman Award for his research in the area of treating schizophrenia. Baker is one of five young investigators being honored nationally by NARSAD, the world's leading donor-supported organization dedicated to finding the causes, improved treatments and cures for psychiatric illness. Hunter receives two CTSI grants
Dr. Sandra Hunter, associate professor of physical therapy, recently received two grants from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Wisconsin. The first is to study the influence of post-traumatic stress disorder on motor impairment in veterans; the second is to study brain activation and the stress response during motor performance in older adults.
Students dive into lab experience
Twenty-eight of the college’s top students had the chance to work aside leading faculty mentors in biomedical sciences, physical therapy, exercise science, clinical laboratory science and speech language pathology as part of this year’s College of Health Sciences Summer Research Program. At the end of the 10-week, full-time program, students presented their findings at a poster session.
College expands space in Cramer
The Biomedical Sciences Learning Center was created in Cramer Hall thanks to a donation in memory of Dr. Robert E. Flood, Med '46, and his wife, Mary. Most students in the college take an anatomy course, so the learning center is already a popular study space for students studying model anatomy.
The college also added a new Strength and Conditioning Laboratory in Cramer for the Exercise Science Program. The new lab significantly expands the program's teaching, research and training opportunities. The lab includes a biomechanics force plate as well as traditional resistance, conditioning and plyometric equipment and will be the site for research-funded training programs.
Welcome, Class of 2014
The college welcomed the Class of 2014 in August. There are 258 new freshmen in the college this year, and they are a talented bunch, with an average ACT score of 27.9. Of the 51 valedictorians in Marquette’s freshman class, 19 are from the College of Health Sciences. The college's total enrollment for the 2010-11 academic year is 1,091 undergraduates and 185 health professionals (PT, SPPA and PA).
