Course Description

This 3.5-hour course is designed for physical therapists, their assistants, and athletic trainers who desire a comprehensive yet practical review of the anatomy and kinesiology of the ankle and foot.

Dr. Don Neumann, author of Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System: Foundations for Rehabilitation (Elsevier 2017), will present an overview of the anatomy and kinesiology of the knee and ankle. The presentation will be lecture format, enhanced by video fluoroscopy of joint function, animated gait videos, unique teaching models, and original kinesiologic illustrations. Each illustration clearly describes the anatomic and mechanical basis for movement, providing the basis for understanding the foundations for many evaluation and treatments experienced in clinical setting.

Intended Audience

This course is specially designed for medical, health, or sports-related professionals who evaluate, treat, or otherwise instruct persons to improve the quality of knee and lower limb movement. This course is valuable for those professionals who work with healthy persons as well as those with pathology associated with neurologic or musculoskeletal causes.

Course Objectives

After the presentation, participants shall be able to:

• Describe the structural and functional relationships within and between the talocrual, subtalar, and transverse tarsal joints.
• List and understand the functional demands placed on the major ligaments of the ankle and foot.
• Cite the muscle actions across the major joints of the foot and ankle.
• Describe several kinesiologic synergies that exist between the muscle and joints of the ankle and other regions of the lower limb.
• Understand how the muscle and joints of the ankle and foot contribute to walking.

Continuing Education Credit

3.5 contact hours will be awarded by Marquette University per statute 9.04 following successful completion of an online quiz.

Faculty

Donald A. Neumann, Ph.D., PT, FAPTA Dr. Neumann received a B.S. in physical therapy from the University of Florida. After several years of practice and teaching in rehabilitation of persons with spinal cord injury, he received a Ph.D. in Exercise Science from the University of Iowa. In 1986, he joined Marquette University where he is currently Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physical Therapy. Don has received multiple awards from the American Physical Therapy Association that have recognized his teaching, writing, and research efforts, including being named a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA in 2008. Dr. Neumann received a Teacher of the Year Award at Marquette University, and was named Wisconsin’s College Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. In 2015, he was awarded the Educational Service Award by the World Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT). Dr. Neumann has received Fulbright Scholarships to teach in Lithuania, Hungary, and Japan and Ireland. He also lectured extensively throughout Asia, Europe, South America, and the United States. He is the author of Human Kinesiology: Foundations for Rehabilitation, published by Elsevier, 2017, and co-author of Kinesiology for the Physical Therapist Assistant (2019, Elsevier). Dr. Neumann also authored a chapter on the Hip, published in the 41st and 42nd editions of British Gray’s Anatomy. Donald served as an Associate Editor of JOSPT from 2002-2015.
