Addiction is a disease that many people are aware of but few understand. From substance dependence or abuse involving drugs, alcohol or tobacco, to behavioral addictions suffered by persons with gambling and eating disorders or compulsive behaviors, many of us know someone afflicted with some form of this illness.
But what makes a person an addict? What are the neurobiological changes that underlie the addiction process and create the need to abuse a substance or compulsively pursue an activity? And how might addictions be overcome?
