Biomedical Sciences faculty receive $400,000 grant

Dr. David Baker, professor and associate chair, and Dr. SuJean Choi, associate professor, both in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, have recently received a $400,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a powerful new molecular genetic tool that will allow their respective research teams to examine the role of a novel cellular mechanism in regulating neurotransmitter release in the brain.

This mechanism, which involves a membrane protein that transports the neurotransmitter glutamate, holds the potential to better understand the pathology underlying neural disorders, ranging from addiction to schizophrenia. At the heart of the strategy is the use of a technology which has been declared a top innovation for 2009 and 2010 by prestigious magazines such as Science and The Scientist, and was deemed "Method of the Year" for 2011 by the journal Nature Methods.
