The Department and the Community

 

In addition to our public programming and interaction with community agencies and organizations through our digital projects, members of the history department engaged the community in a number of different ways:

 

Steve Avella aided in the formation of young priests in Milwaukee Archdiocese, while Jennifer Finn delivered series of lectures on ancient history at Clement Manor Center for Community Enrichment, Jim Marten was co-chair of the committee to commemorate the 175th anniversary of First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee and Laura Matthew was President of the Rufus King High School Parent, Teacher, Student Organization.  Finally, in addition to reaching out to local Indigenous populations, primarily the Oneida and Lakota, Bryan Rindfleish will be working with the Red Cloud Indian School and the Heritage Center on the Pine Ridge reservation, on programming related to the “Red Cloud Indian Art Show’s 50th Anniversary Gala” on the reservation next year.

 

Alison Efford’s History 4120: Immigration History collaborated with students and teachers at St. Rafael Catholic Middle School to create online projects related to the history of the migrant community. St. Rafael students came to campus twice a month to work with students in 4120, and together they presented their websites to the public at an event held in the Eisenberg Room at the end of the semester (pictured below).  You can read more about the project in the blog written by William Denzer, the graduate assistant helping with the class here.
