Graduate student research honored by professional organizations

 

McKayla Sutton

The American Conference of Irish Studies has awarded PhD candidate McKayla Sutton the 2012 Past President's Award for her paper, "'Practicing the Goose Step in Phoenix Park': Imagining Irishness amongst Germans in the Promotion of the Shannon Hydroelectric Scheme."McKayla delivered the paper at the ACIS annual meeting held last month in New Orleans. Current ACIS president, Dr. Sean Farrell of Northern Illinois University, commented "One of our most important functions of our organization is the development and promotion of young scholars in the field so it's a great honor to recognize you for your fine work."

 

Adam Mertz

Adam Mertz, MA candidate, has won the 2011 Zeidler Academic Award (graduate student category) from the Wisconsin Labor History Society for his seminar paper entitled "Forged in the Fire of Community: The 1974 Hortonville Teachers' Strike and the Rise of Modern Conservatism." He wrote the paper for Jim Marten’s seminar, Children Families, and Communities in US History (fall 2011).
