Understanding and Enhancing Your Workplace Communication Skills

We are continually told that communication skills are critical in today’s workplace, but we often take for granted what that really means and how we actually communicate with others.  What communication skills are needed at work?  How can we improve communication so that we minimize miscommunication?

This 2-hour session will provide you with the resources to improve your individual communication skills and your ability to assess and improve a variety of communication situations.  Topics will include the role of perception and biases, listening, nonverbal cues, and how to create and maintain a supportive communication climate.

Communication skills are life skills—this session will help you improve both!

Understanding Conflict

(Part one of two part series)

Why does conflict occur?  Why do I respond to conflict the way I do?  If you’ve ever asked yourself these questions, come to this program on understanding conflict!

We will explore how conflict unfolds and how your conflict style affects its outcome.  Are you avoiding conflict?  Are you escalating conflict unnecessarily?  How can you become more collaborative and encourage the person you are in conflict with to become the same?

Before the program, Kerry will send you a styles assessment questionnaire for you to complete.  This is a practical program that will help you understand and constructively engage in conflict in both your personal and work life.  A follow up program, on resolving conflict, will be held on Tuesday, September 8th, from 9 to 11am.

Preventive Care, What Does It Include?

Many people do not see the value of an annual health care visit. They only see their health care providers when they are sick or feel there is something wrong. Unfortunately, many chronic conditions do not make us feel sick until well into the process, or until they have done significant damage to one or more of our body’s systems.  Some of these people will have chronic diseases that will be detected late in the course of the disease process. Sometimes the harm can be prevented or made less severe with early detection and/or intervention.

If you are one of these people or have a loved one who is, or if you do not have a primary care provider, this session is for you.  Participants will be presented with the definition of preventive care, why they should have regular visits, and what should be included in those visits.

Estate Planning

Estate planning is all about taking control of what happens to your property and assets after your death.  There are many different tools available to help you plan your estate but perhaps the most important tool is your will.  No matter how old you are, or your current state of health, you should always have a will that is up to date and valid.  If you have minor children your will becomes even more important.  Many states insist on a will in order for you to name custody for your children with the guardian of your choice.  Your will doesn’t need to be summarized by a lawyer, however legal advice can help you accomplish what you want with your will.

Twitter, Facebook, Blogging and LinkedIn – Productivity drain or valuable services we need to use?

Social Networking sites are transforming how we communicate and share information in a social, highly networked and more transparent world. Communication is interactive and engaging: it builds a community of people with like interests who communicate directly from person to person. Social networks and blogs have become the fourth most popular online category, ahead of personal e-mail, and their popularity is growing.

Tim Cigelske, Gee Ekachai, Scott Feldstein, Linda Menck and Dax Phillips, experienced users of these sites, will share with us how they use them and explore how Marquette departments and colleges can use them.

Marquette University's GasDay Project

The GasDay Project is one of Marquette University's major technology transfer efforts.  Located within the College of Engineering, the GasDay Project conducts research into energy demand modeling, and develops energy forecasting models and software applications used by some of the country's largest natural gas utilities.  Marquette University licenses GasDay software and models to 19 energy companies that use it to forecast almost 20 percent of the nation's natural gas demand every day.

GasDay's customers expect GasDay products to be of high quality and delivered in a professional manner, just like any other software system they license for their businesses.  GasDay is produced right here at Marquette by a team of students and faculty.  The project provides an excellent educational laboratory for students to get some real-world experience producing and supporting a genuine, successful product.  Students work in roles ranging from sales and marketing to customer support and software engineering.  Come tour the GasDay Lab and meet the team that produces Marquette's energy-industry-leading forecasting tools.
