We have created this page to help you find the answers to some questions you might have on Voluntary Long-term Care Insurance. We hope that you'll find it helpful!

Q. Why is Marquette University providing access to, and an educational program on, discounted long-term care at this time?

A. An increasing number of employees and retirees have been inquiring about long-term care topics and if Marquette University was considering this benefit. After a very thorough study, Marquette is providing access to education on long-term care topics thorough seminars, mailings, Intranet and independent Internet sites.

Q. Why are two companies being offered?

A. Our study of insurance companies indicated that we could best help our employees, retirees and their families by offering more than one company. It seems each company targets different demographics. Some target active employees, others target only the very healthy, and others try to balance their offering to meet the majority of potential policyholders. The combination of two companies should give individuals the best opportunity to compare and select the one they feel is the best for financing their future long-term care services.

Northwestern Mutual is an internationally recognized, Milwaukee-based insurance company. John Hancock is one of the premier long-term care insurance carriers.

Q. Is insurance guaranteed regardless of health?

A. John Hancock offers guaranteed coverage into the plan regardless of your current health status if you meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Newly hired eligible employee, faculty, staff or administrator or newly eligible employee, faculty, staff or administrator applying within 30 days of first becoming eligible for this benefit.
  2. An eligible employee, faculty, staff or administrator who was on a leave of absence or disability during the designated 2006 enrollment period enrolling within 30 days of returning to work on a regular basis.

Q. Who can take advantage of this program?

A. All employees, their spouses, employees and spouses' family members, including brothers, sisters and parents.

Payroll deduction is available for employees for employee and/or spouse's premiums. Same rules and format apply as health insurance payroll deductions.

Q. What is Marquette’s role in providing its employees access to these individual policies?

A. Marquette is providing access to these options. However, each insurer is fully responsible for its own product. Marquette is in no way financially or legally responsible for any long-term care product you select.

Q. What additional activity is planned?

A. Seminars and individual meetings are scheduled. Individuals can also schedule personal meetings with representatives on campus or at your homes. Additional mailings will be sent periodically with new information.

Q. Can I pre-tax or put premiums in my flexible spending account?

A. Not at this time. You may be able to deduct premiums from Wisconsin income tax (line 11 on current form).

Federal premium deductions are very limited for active employees (perhaps under medical expenses when itemizing federal return and then still very limited). As with any tax issue, personal circumstances vary so consult your personal tax advisor.

Q. Who do I contact for more information and/or enrollment assistance?

A. Contact the representatives below. Do not contact the Human Resources Department because we can only refer you to the insurer representatives.
