Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, S.J., associate provost for academic initiatives at Marquette, was selected as Creighton University's president-elect on Sunday, Dec. 7; he will take office July 1, 2015. "Father Hendrickson has made a wide range of thoughtful and productive contributions to Marquette, and we will miss his involvement with our leadership team," said President Michael R. Lovell.

NBA star and Marquette University alum Dwyane Wade's gift to Hartman Literacy Center continues to draw media coverage

Marquette University alumnus and Miami HEAT star Dwyane Wade spoke at a news conference this week about the donation he made to the university's Ralph C. Hartman Literacy and Learning Center to help improve the region's literacy gap among inner-city children. The gift was made through Wade's World Foundation, which provides support to community-based organizations that promote education, health and social skills for children in at-risk situations.

Marquette University continues discussion on potential on-campus police department
Marquette University officials are reviewing recommendations regarding the university creating its own police force. A police department would allow officers to make arrests for state and local violations, access law enforcement records and enforce traffic laws. There is no set timeline for a decision but the City of Milwaukee has indicated support for the proposal.

Marquette University contributes to redevelopment project

Marquette University, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, MillerCoors, Aurora Health Care and others have joined forces in an effort to improve Milwaukee's Near West Side neighborhoods. Ideas the group has generated include adding more security cameras to N. 27th St., renovating some of the deteriorated housing and encouraging employees to buy homes in the neighborhood.

Marquette University students hold 'die in' protest
About 50 Marquette University students gathered at the university's Alumni Memorial Union for a "die in" protest on Dec. 8. The group of students laid on the ground for four and a half minutes in solidarity with movements across the country to bring awareness to issues of police brutality.

Abdur Chowdhury, professor of economics,
discussed how employment gains in the Milwaukee area have been uneven following the recession due to an urban-suburban divide. "This racial-spatial mismatch, a result of Milwaukee's hyper-segregation, is a central economic challenge facing the region," Chowdhury said.

Marquette University Department of Public Safety participates in annual 'Shop with a Cop' event
Marquette University's Department of Public Safety officers participated in a holiday shopping event that assisted 80 Milwaukee-area children on Dec. 6. Children from first to eighth grade were paired with a law enforcement officer who helped them do their Christmas shopping. The program is designed to build positive relationships among law enforcement officers and young people in the Milwaukee community.
