Interdisciplinary Major in International Affairs

Program Description

The International Affairs program (INIA) is designed for students who are interested in diplomacy, international affairs, international service, and/or international business, and might be thinking about a career in one of these fields. It offers a solid foundation in the fields of Economics and Political Science, and supplemental course work in History and foreign languages and cultures. Graduates work for non-governmental organizations, to post-graduate studies in law, business, and political science, and to careers in international law, international banking or business, university teaching and research, and broadcast or print journalism specializing in international affairs.

In their first and second years, INIA Students take introductory courses in History, Economics, Political Science and Statistics, along with other courses required by the curricula of their respective colleges (e.g., Business Administration, Communication, or Arts and Sciences). While completing these, and after consulting with their faculty advisors, they choose an area of concentration. Students complete the major with an interdisciplinary, capstone seminar.

Faculty members affiliated with the international affairs program are teachers-scholars who have lived and worked in other cultures. In addition, through its Allis-Chalmers Distinguished Chair in International Studies and other programs, Marquette regularly brings outstanding national and international scholars and practitioners in the field to its campus to give public lectures, teach courses and seminars, and interact with students. Lastly, INIA program students have the options of such off-campus programs as the United Nations program (a two-week, three credit course at the United Nations in New York), and special summer and full-semester study-abroad programs (for language and general studies).

If you have questions or are interested in declaring an INIA major, please contact Dr. H. Richard Friman at 288-5991 or by email.
