These courses are prerequisites required for required INIA core courses or potential Helen Way Klingler Arts and Sciences College Curriculum courses that contribute to a better grasp of international affairs. Many can be used simultaneously to satisfy Arts and Sciences College Curriculum requirements and University Core of Common Studies requirements.
While these courses are required of all INIA majors, they do not count as part of the 30 credit hours required for the major. Since these are background courses, the minimum requirements for grades for courses required for majors do not apply.
If you are completing a double major or minor, you should be aware that some departments require you to complete a minimum number of courses that you only count toward that major or minor. For example, no more than six hours of the credits counted to fulfill an INIA major or minor may be counted toward any other major or minor. The background courses do not count against this six hour rule.
Since many of these courses are prerequisites for other required courses, you should complete these courses as soon as possible.
The required background courses are:
1. Growth of Western Civilization (HIST 001/1001 or HIST 002/1002) and one of the following courses: Latin America (HIST 71/1301), Africa (HIST 77/1401), East Asia (HIST 82/1501)
2. Principles of Microeconomics and Macroeconomics (ECON 043/2003 and 044/2004)
ECON 043/2003 and 044/2004 are prerequisites for the required upper division course in international economics.
3. Comparative Politics (POSC 040/2401)
4. International Politics (POSC 060/2601)
POSC 040/2401 and POSC 060/2601 are prerequisites for the required upper division courses in political science.
5. Statistics (MANA 28/2028, SOCI 60/2060, MATH 60/1700, or PSYC 60/2001)
Only one statistics course is required. This course will count as one of the two Math-Logic-Computer courses required for the Arts and Sciences Curriculum.
6. Foreign Language (through the intermediate level, i.e., 004/2002 level)
INIA students are encouraged to take at least two language courses beyond the intermediate level, and, preferably, to minor or major in a foreign language.
