Microsoft Unified Communications offers a convenient and integrated wa
y to communicate, with more options for accessing and managing communications. Unified Communications replaces voicemail systems and e-mail servers with one integrated system. Access the Unified Communications system by using your mail client, Outlook or Entourage, or use the telephone keypad or speech inputs to navigate the menu structure. For best user experience with Unified Communications, it is recommended that you use Microsoft Office 07.
Implementation Schedule (Top)
IT Services will replace the university’s voicemail system this Spring with Unified Communications. Implementation will be staggered, starting on March 17th. You will receive e-mail notification of the exact date when your phone or phones will be switched to the new system. Read more details about the Unified Communications Implementation Schedule.
Access your Voice Mail during the Unified Communications Rollout (Top)
When you are updated to Unified Communications:
Your old/OCTEL mailbox will remain as is.
- To access messages, dial 8-3939, and use your OLD password.
- At a future date (TBD), after everyone has been switched to UC, the OCTEL voice mailbox and all the associated messages will be deleted.
New messages will be delivered to your new/UC mailbox.
- You can access messages via your e-mail, by dialing 8-6990, or press the voice mail button on your phone, using your newly assigned PIN (password). You can change your PIN (password) on the phone, via Outlook 2007 or OWA. See the PDFs below for instructions.
- The red light will not show you that a new message has been received. You will receive notification of a new voice mail message in your Inbox.
- There are 2 exceptions to this, where a message will be delivered to your old/OCTEL mailbox: if a person who is not UC enabled forwarded a message from their mailbox to you, or if they responded to a voice mail message from you by pressing 8. The red light will show for messages in your old/OCTEL box only.
You should change your greeting on your new voice mailbox by following the prompts when you call in to your new voice mailbox for the first time.
Features of Unified Communications (Top)
Voice mail messages are delivered directly to your Inbox:
Listen to a voice mail message on the computer. Forward it, take notes in it, and save it, just like any piece of e-mail. Search for old voice mail messages, and set a voice mail Out-of-Office message.
Receive E-mail messages on your phone or mobile device:
Listen to your e-mails, and reply to, forward or delete, or search them.
- Access your Calendar on your phone or mobile device:
Check your calendar, and send e-mails to attendees of a meeting. Clear your calendar for the day, and accept or cancel meeting requests.
- Manage your personal contacts on your phone or mobile device:
Access or dial contacts stored in the global address list or a personal contact list. This means that you can call anyone listed in the company directory.
