Janis M. Orlowski, M.D., MACP

Dr. Janis M. OrlowskiDr. Janis M. Orlowski, Eng ’78, was elected to the Marquette University Board of Trustees in 2012.

She graduated magna cum laude from Marquette’s College of Engineering with a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering in 1978. She received her medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1982. Her residency (1982–1985), her term as chief resident (1985–1986) and her fellowship in nephrology (1986–1988) were completed at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

She served as chief health care officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) from 2013 to 2022.  During that time, she led several AAMC groups, including the Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems, which represents the interests of approximately 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems, including 64 Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers.

Before joining the AAMC, Dr. Orlowski served as the chief operating officer and chief medical officer of MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., from 2004 to 2013. Prior to MedStar Washington, she served as associate vice president and executive dean of the Rush University Medical School in Chicago.

As a board-certified physician in internal medicine and nephrology, Dr. Orlowski has been in practice for more than 25 years, specializing in acute renal care and transplantation. Her dedication and devotion to medicine has been recognized with numerous teaching excellence awards and appointments on several nationally prominent boards and committees such as the D.C. Board of Medicine, United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) on transplant policy, Chicago Medical Society and Illinois State Medical Society. Dr. Orlowski also serves as the chair of the board of Montini Catholic High School, on the board of trustees of the Medical College of Wisconsin and on the board of Creighton University.

Dr. Orlowski and her husband, William McNulty, Eng ’75, have one son, Connor McNulty. Dr. Orlowski is a member of the Marquette University President’s Society.
