Hon. W. Greg Ryberg

Hon. W. Greg RybergW. Greg Ryberg, Arts ‘68, was elected to the Marquette University Board of Trustees in 2008.

Senator Ryberg was elected to the South Carolina State Senate in 1992, where he served for five full terms before retiring in 2012.

Upon graduation from Marquette University, Greg worked in the planning department at Kimberly-Clark in Neenah, Wisconsin. From 1973 to 1977 Greg worked for Sanford Corporation in Chicago. Greg served as a member of the United States National Guard from 1968 to 1974. In 1977 Greg relocated to Aiken, South Carolina, purchased an oil distributorship and started a convenience store business. He built 53 stores employing more than 550 people before selling to a public company in 1999.

Greg has served on the National Association of Convenience Stores board and as a member of the Petroleum Marketers Association of America. He was the first recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Businessman of the Year Award; 1998 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year National Finalist; six-year recipient of the South Carolina Friend of the Taxpayer Award; National Transportation Safety Leadership Award; State Farm Alliance Seat Belt Champion Award; co-founder of Junior Achievement of Aiken County; Business and Industry Political Education Committee Guardian of Small Business Award; and former finance chairman of St. Mary Help of Christians Parish in Aiken, South Carolina.

A native of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Greg met his future wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Denkewalter while studying for a bachelor of science degree in mathematics at Marquette University. They will celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary this year with their three children: Amy (44), Kyle, MU ’95 (42) and Shana (39) and seven grandchildren. Greg enjoys golf, travel, following Marquette basketball, cycling, and skiing.

He is a member of the Marquette University Archbishop Henni Founders Society.
