DOROTHY DAY-CATHOLIC WORKER COLLECTION
DOROTHY AND WILLIAM GAUCHAT PAPERS, 1930-2001

Biographical Note

William (1907-1975) and Dorothy Gauchat (1921-2000) were natives of Cleveland, Ohio, who became involved in the Catholic Worker
movement in the 1930s.They met when the young Dorothy Schmitt was a high school volunteer at Cleveland’s Blessed Martin De Porres House
of Hospitality, which Gauchat had helped found in 1938. After an apprenticeship with liturgical artist Ade Bethune in Newport, Rhode Island,
Schmitt married Gauchat in November1941.The couple moved to the Cleveland CW’s farm in nearby Avon to start a family, which they expanded
by fostering children with severe disabilities. This was the genesis of Our Lady of the Wayside home, established in 1968 as William Gauchat
battled the cancer which would claim his life. Dorothy Gauchat severed her ties with the home and founded the Colette Marie Infant Hospice for
children with HIV/AIDS in 1987.
