History: In 1808, Boston was erected as a diocese for the states of New England from the northeast portion of the Diocese of Baltimore. In 1853, the dioceses of Burlington and Portland were erected as separate dioceses for Maine and Vermont, respectively, two states with modest Catholic Native American populations.
