History: The Diocese of Mayaguez was erected in western Puerto Rico from a portion of the Diocese of Puerto Rico, 1967. Evangelization of Native Americans began after 1511 and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Purification was established, 1763. Taino Indians and Mestizos were among the parishioners of several parishes, including the cathedral parish and San German de Auxerre Church, San German, which was the last community with identified Taino Indians in the census of 1778.
