History: Holy Name of Mary Church, Sault Sainte Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan, has been a predominantly non-Native American parish that had some Native American (Ojibwa, Métis) parishioners in the Diocese of Marquette (Archives: Marquette, Michigan).

1834-1838

Redemptorists (Archives: Chicago, Illinois) established and administered a chapel (Ojibwa) at Sault Sainte Marie

1836-1838

Redemptorists established and staffed a school  

1837-1838

Redemptorists established and administered St. Mary Mission

1838-1845

Detroit diocesan priests attended St. Mary’s from St. Peter’s, Harbor Springs

1846-1861

Jesuits (Upper Canada Province) (Archives: Montreal, Quebec) administered St. Mary's

1847-1860s

Jesuits established and staffed a School for Boys

1853-1860

Ursulines (presently, Crystal City, Missouri) established and staffed a School for Girls

Became a parish; diocesan priests administered St. Mary Church
