Administrative History: The position of Executive Vice President was created in 1956. It was assigned responsibility for directing and coordinating the day-to-day operation of the university, thus enabling the University President to devote more time to policy matters and long-range development programs. The position was discontinued in 1970. It was reestablished in 1974 with responsibilities similar to those mentioned above. The office was again discontinued in August 2002, when a revised structure of university administrative and academic leadership was introduced. The responsibilities of the Executive Vice President were then largely assumed by the Senior Vice President (see A-1.2, series 9). After Greg Kliebhan's retirement in 2011 and Father Pilarz's arrival at Marquette, the position was again introduced, with Mary DiStanislao named to the role. As of 2012, the Executive Vice President oversees the Office of Administration, the Division of Student Affairs, and the Department of Human Resources, in addition to working closely with the provost and president to facilitate university-wide strategic planning.

Restrictions: Access to select records from the Executive Vice President's office is restricted for 25 years from the closing date of the tenure of the President under whom each Executive Vice President served. As an example, records from the tenure of Rev. William P. Leahy, S.J., who served during Rev. Albert J. DiUlios term as President (1990-1996), are restricted until 2021. Written permission from the Executive Vice Presidents office is required to obtain access prior to the expiration of this restriction. Otherwise, access to these records is unrestricted. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of these records.
