B-5.4 Alumni Personal Papers

Abstract:

The Department of Special Collections and University Archives collects alumni records that relate to its core collecting areas: Marquette University, Catholic organizations, movements, and individuals promoting social change in the United States, including change within the Catholic Church; Catholic activity among Native Americans in North America; and the Midwest Catholic organizations and individuals involved in Catholic broadcasting (radio and television) in the United States.

Additionally, the University Archives collects the papers of alumni who are artists, writers, "popular" entertainers, broadcasters, journalists, or who are active in local, state, or national politics as elected or appointed public officials. Acceptance of collections presented for donation that do not meet the above conditions is made on a discretionary basis.

Each collection is separately cataloged in MARQCAT and assigned the Library of Congress subject heading "Marquette University—Alumni and Alumnae."

Scope and Content:  The informational content of these collections varies considerably. However, information about the following subjects is contained in two or more alumni collections:

See the scope and content note of each collection for more detailed information.

Arrangement:  Collections of alumni papers that are no more than a single folder of material are arranged in series 1, Small Collections. Larger collections are arranged as subseries within series 2. During processing, archivists remove published material from alumni papers and add it to the Alumni Authors record group. The University Archives maintains biographical files for many prominent alumni. These files generally consist of press releases, clippings, and photographs.
