Genealogy Request Form

Several collections in the Marquette Archives contain records about Native Americans that have genealogical value. Generally, the most useful are sacramental and church census records, U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs census records, high school transcripts, and mission school attendance records, which are identified here. Several collections also contain photographs of children and adults, which are not described here.

The genealogical records exist in several formats, which are identified among the record descriptions below:

Original records: If 70 years old or less, or within folders that contain other records, which are 70 years old or less, the records are restricted. No original records are available via interlibrary loan. But if not restricted, reformatted PDF copies are available on request via e-mail and reformatting fees may apply.

Microfilmed original records: If 70 years old or less, or within folders that contain other records that are 70 years old or less, the records are restricted and not available via interlibrary loan. If not restricted, reformatted PDF copies are available on request via e-mail and reformatting fees may apply.

Redacted facsimiles of original records: These copies are not restricted because the confidential personal information, e.g. degree of Indian blood, conduct information, has been masked. Reformatted PDF copies are available on request via e-mail and reformatting fees may apply.

On-site visitors may conduct research in unrestricted records, and after consulting with the archivist in charge, on-site visitors may be permitted to conduct research in specific records that are restricted, i.e. original records, microfilmed original records.

School Records

Restrictions: FERPA governs access to these records. Please Ask an Archivist for more information.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 governs access to student-related educational records. Legal interpretation has weighed in favor of applying a personal right to privacy to these records, and generally that privacy lapses with the death of the individual. In standard archival practice, restrictions on life-long records are lifted 70 years after their creation. Furthermore, FERPA's restrictions do not apply to student records held by non-educational institutions such as the branch repositories of the U.S. National Archives, which also hold copies of these student attendance records in its Indian agency records. It is possible that gaps among the copies in the Marquette Archives may not exist or may exist elsewhere among the copies at the National Archives branch repositories.

The records often list individual names, dates of school attendance, tribal affiliation, degree of Indian blood, and comments explaining attendance and performance in school. The holdings of the Marquette Archives contain school records from these states and in the following formats:
