ASSOCIATION OF NATIVE RELIGIOUS AND CLERGY RECORDS

Mostly color photographs and a 1992 statement from the Association of Native Religious and Clergy and personal papers of a member, Reverend Georges P. Mathieu.

Mark G. Thiel interviewed Reverend Georges P. Mathieu in 1987 and at that time, Reverend Mathieu donated his personal papers. Sister Genevieve Cuny, O.S.F., loaned the photographs for copying in 1997. Processed by Mark G. Thiel in 1987 and 1997.

Historical Note

The Association of Native Religious and Clergy was established in 1971 and is comprised of American Indian Catholic clergy and religious from the United States and Canada. Since 1979, its annual gathering has been held nearby and just prior to the annual meeting of the Tekakwitha Conference, which in the 1980s was transformed into an association of native Catholics. Many ANRC members have been active in both organizations.


Scope and Content

Series 1, Statement: Regarding ANRC members and their sentiments regarding the saintliness of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha.

Series 2, Photography -- Black & White, Color, and Negatives: Images of native clergy and religious at the ANRC gatherings and the Tekakwitha Conference.

Series 3, Personal Papers: Reverend Georges P. Mathieu donated his personal papers and was interviewed by Mark G. Thiel in 1987. Sister Genevieve Cuny, O.S.F., loaned the photographs for copying in 1997 and Mark G. Thiel processed the collection in 2004. Restrictions apply to portions of the interview until 2012 (25 years).
