Historical Note

Hotel entrepreneur Conrad N. Hilton established the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation in 1944. The foundation remained relatively small until his death in 1979 when it received the bulk of his estate. In accordance with Hilton's Last Will and Testament, the foundation seeks to alleviate the suffering of the most disadvantaged worldwide, with a special emphasis on children’s needs and humanitarian work administered by Roman Catholic women religious (nuns).

The Fund for Sisters was established in 1986 and began awarding grants in 1988. It operates under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and is the principal beneficiary of the Conrad N. Hilton Fund.

Most awards have been under $15,000 and provide materials, essential equipment, and operating expenses in projects that include at least one vowed member of an officially recognized Roman Catholic congregation of religious women in a full-time capacity. The proposals are intended to serve directly the economically disadvantaged or assist congregations of women religious to communicate and collaborate with one another. Health care, education and economic development are priority concerns.
