Electronic Access to Images in
Tommy G. Thompson Collection Now Available

The Department of Special Collections and University Archives has launched its Tommy G. Thompson digital collection, featuring 500 images depicting Thompson's public service in Wisconsin (1967-2001). The majority of photographs chronicle his tenure as the longest serving governor in Wisconsin history (1987-2001). Events portrayed include state of the state addresses, foreign trade missions, groundbreakings, political rallies, and Thompson's celebrated Harley Davidson riding tours. The images depict Governor Thompson's work throughout the state, including his annual "Moving State Government" tours. Links to 140 of the governor's speeches allow visitors to read remarks prepared for specific events depicted.

The digitized photographs and speeches represent a small portion of the entire Tommy G. Thompson Collection located at Raynor Memorial Library. Archivists have embarked on a four year plan to process the textual, audiovisual, and memorabilia material donated to Marquette University by the former governor. To date, over 4,000 speeches and 15,000 photographs have been inventoried, as well as 250 audiocassettes and 300 videocassettes. Other processed portions of the collection include election campaign files and budget materials. In 2005, Thompson donated additional materials documenting his service as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services in the first administration of President George W. Bush.

Digitization and processing of this collection have been made possible by a grant from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation.
