"Illustrating and Annotating The Hobbit" |

| Marquette University Libraries is pleased to
present an informal and entertaining look at The Hobbit, the beloved
children's novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. Douglas A. Anderson will offer a slide
presentation about his research on Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Smaug, and the cast from 1937
novel. Anderson is the author The Annotated Hobbit (Houghton Mifflin), originally
published in 1988 and recently expanded and revised. A question and answer
session will follow the presentation. The new edition of The
Annotated Hobbit, along with other titles about J.R.R. Tolkien, will also be
available for sale at the event. Marquette University Libraries' Department of
Special Collections and Archives has organized the program, with additional support from
the Libraries' Colloquium Committee. Doug Anderson has utilized the J.R.R. Tolkien Papers at Marquette University Libraries for over 20 years, helping correct the text of The Lord of the Rings in both the American and English editions. In addition, Anderson collaborated with Wayne G. Hammond on J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography (1993). He contributed "Christopher Tolkien: A Bibliography" to Tolkien's Legendarium: Essays on The History of Middle-earth (2000) and "Tolkien After All These Years" to Meditations on Middle-earth (2001). Other books Anderson has edited include The Dragon Path: Collected Tales of Kenneth Morris (1995) and a reissue of E.A. Wyke-Smiths The Marvellous Land of Snergs (1996), a childrens book originally published in 1927 that Tolkien read to his children and provided the impetus for The Hobbit. |

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the

| Marquette University Student Government (MUSG) and Marquette University Libraries are
sponsoring a return to the big screen of Peter Jackson's epic adventure, The Lord of
the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Released in December 2001, the Fellowship
of the Ring was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, including best picture,
cinematography, music, visual effects, and supporting actor (Ian McKellan as the wizard
Gandalf). New Line Cinema's second installment of The Lord of the Rings - The
Two Towers - is scheduled for release on December 18th. Tickets
for the film are available at the Varsity Theater ticket office the evening of the show.
Admission is $2.00 for Marquette students, and $3.00 for faculty, staff, and the general
public. Free visitor parking for these events is available in Parking Structure #1, located at 749 N. 16th Street. Directions to the Marquette campus are available online.
