The
Department of Special Collections and University Archives has launched its
Native America Images
digital collection, featuring 1,200 images selected
from over 50,000 photographs contained in the
Christianity and Native America Collections at Marquette. Archivists
have purposely selected images depicting a variety of Native communities
and geographic locations.
To date, 79 tribes in 25 states and the District of Columbia are
represented in the digital collection. A majority of images document
the West, Southwest, and Upper Great Lakes. Images from the records of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions (BCIM) form the foundation of this collection. Clergy and women religious working among Native Americans routinely sent photographs to the editors of BCIM’s magazine, The Indian Sentinel (1902-1962), often submitting detailed descriptions about their subject matter. The online collection is a convenient tool for learning more about this important research collection. Powered by CONTENTdm software, visitors can conduct keyword searches, or rely on pull-down menus and search by subject categories, state, or tribe. Additional images from Marquette’s Native American Collections will be added to the electronic catalog in late 2005 and 2006. |
