| B-15 Père Marquette Postage Stamp Collection, 1898-1981 | ||
| History: The image on the
1898 "Marquette on the Mississippi" stamp is based on Wilhelm Lamprecht's
painting, Fr. Marquette and the Indians (1869). Marquette University, owner of
the painting, furnished the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing a photographic
reproduction to aid their work. The 1968 "Marquette Explorer" stamp was issued in conjunction with the Marquette Tercentenary Celebration. The stamp was issued on September 6 at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where Marquette established in 1668 the first permanent Euro-American settlement in the state. Restrictions: Access to these records is unrestricted. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of these records.
