| Biographical Note: Herbert W. Kuhm was
born on February 25, 1898. He graduated from North Division High School in Milwaukee in
June 1916. After graduation, Kuhm worked at the Milwaukee Sentinel and attended
night classes in Marquette University's School of Journalism. He entered the College of
Dentistry in 1917. He participated in the short-lived Student Army Training Corps
(S.A.T.C.), a government program designed to prepare pre-draft age men for service in the
army and navy. As a junior, he was one of two students in charge of the school's morgue.
During his senior year, he wrote a popular comic sketch for the all-university vaudeville
show; helped organize the Harlequins, a student dramatic club; and served as humor editor
of the student annual, The Hilltop. Kuhm graduated from Marquette in June 1921.
He died in August 1979. Restrictions: Access to these records is unrestricted. Consult an archivist for further information. Scope and Content: The collection consists of a single scrapbook assembled by Herbert W. Kuhm during his undergraduate years at Marquette University, 1917-1923. It includes photographs, clippings, and ephemera documenting his activities with the Student Army Training Corps (S.A.T.C.); the College of Dentistry; the Harlequins, a student drama group; and the student annual, The Hilltop. The scrapbook contains remarkable, graphic photographs of the College of Dentristry's morgue, annotated with Kuhm's mocking commentary, and colorful ephemera relating to campus performing arts. |
