| Biographical Note: Robert D. Murphy was
born in 1895 and attended Marquette University in the 1910s. He served as one of President
Franklin Roosevelt's top aides during World War II and later as ambassador to Belguium
(1949-1952) and Japan (1952-1953). Murphy worked for the State Department until 1960, at
which time he became chair of the board of the Corning Glass Company, a post he held until
his retirement. He died in 1978. Restrictions: Access to these records is unrestricted. However, the researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of these records. Consult an archivist for further information. Scope and Content: The collection consists of Robert D. Murphy's correspondence to his friend, Hugh H. Gaffney, 1916-1918; newspaper clippings relating to his career with the State Department in the 1950s; and a single photograph, 1917. Arrangement: The collection is arranged by record type, then chronologically. |
